How to Care for your Oil Painting

How to Care for your Oil Painting

So, you've got your masterpiece. You can't help but beam each time you pass it, hanging on the living room wall. But, how do you ensure your painting is something that can be passed down and treasured by your family, generations to come? Here are a few tips for keeping your new work of art beautiful:

Framing

While you may be used to using glass picture frames, oil paintings cannot be stored under glass. The glass can damage the surface of oil painting, which is very delicate. The proper way to hang a painting is either in a frame for looks without glass, which will protect the edges. Or simply hang on the wall frame-less for a contemporary minimal look.

Weather

The materials in oil paint respond to changes in the weather. Humidity and extreme cold causes paintings to expand and warp. If this happens continually, the painting and the canvas will begin to fall apart: cracking, splitting and flaking. Take a cue from museums who keep their galleries at 68 degrees and keep an eye on the thermostat in the room of your painting.

Environment

Smoke can cause damage to your painting, so eliminate smoking around the painting. To be safe, also cut down on incense or candle burning in that room.

Sunlight

Do not hang the painting in direct sunlight, the sun's UV rays will cause fading. This will happen naturally over time but keeping your painting shaded can significantly slow this process.

Dusting

Use a very soft brush to dust the painting. Avoid feather dusters and sheep skin dusters, as these can catch. If paint is flaking or surface otherwise looks cracked and unstable, don't risk dusting.

Cleaning

If you must try cleaning, dab a smooth cloth with warm water and a bit of mild detergent (nothing that can remove varnish) and gently clean.

These tips should get you started down the right path and keep your painting looking like new for years. However, if major damage occurs know that there are always professional cleaning and restoration services you can call on. Over time, oil paint can lose it's original luster, yellowing. A professional restorer can always fix this, ensuring that your new artwork is as bright as it is today.
